Introducing Senatus Fund

Senatus Fund

We are pleased to formally introduce Senatus Fund and share the roots of our investment thesis. Senatus Fund is a hands-on venture fund that invests in seed‐stage startups and builds diverse management teams that have the potential to scale quickly, dominate large markets, & have a clear pathways to exit. We invest early, work closely with founders, and actively help build the teams required to turn promising ideas into enduring companies.

At the core of our thesis is a conviction shaped by both data and experience: teams matter more than ideas alone. We believe diverse management teams across experience, background, race, and gender are better positioned to make sound decisions, navigate uncertainty, and generate superior outcomes. This belief is supported by decades of research, including repeated studies from McKinsey & Company demonstrating that companies with diverse leadership teams consistently outperform their peers on financial metrics and long-term value creation.

Diversity alone is not the strategy, it is one component of a broader, execution-driven approach. Before launching Senatus Fund, Trent Christensen and I led the leadership team at VentureCapital.Org (formerly the Wayne Brown Institute, now Kinect Capital), a venture accelerator designed to help founders refine their narratives, strengthen their teams, and raise capital. Our model paired startup CEO’s with mentors who had direct, functional startup experience (investors, operators, legal professionals, and finance leaders) who had been through the process themselves. That shared operating context mattered. Founders were better prepared, messaging improved, and companies raised capital at roughly a two-thirds success rate.

Those lessons directly inform how we invest today. Because we focus on pre-seed and seed stages, many of the companies we back are early not only in product, but in team composition. Gaps in experience are common and expected. Senatus Fund takes an active role in helping founders build out management teams, advisory boards, and boards of directors, intentionally embedding diversity of perspective and functional expertise from the beginning, rather than treating it as an afterthought.

We view this as a triple-lens approach: combining market opportunity, execution capability, and team composition to increase the probability of outsized outcomes across the portfolio. Venture capital is inherently uncertain. No manager can predict which individual investment will ultimately drive fund-level returns, nor what macroeconomic conditions will exist at exit. In an environment defined by uncertainty, we are placing our bet where it matters most: on founders and teams equipped to adapt, execute, and win. Senatus Fund exists to back those teams, and to help build them.
